schmalz? ... SCHMALZ!

Until very recently I had no idea that something actually called SCHMALZ even existed.
It's been lurking in the fridge for weeks. Looked innocent enough, but with huge potential for being hideous. In addition, none of The Germans could adequately describe what it really was, other than"it's Schmalz!".

So what's it like?
Not bad. Nice even.
It tastes like fried onions!
How about that then?

Cheers Sands!
Yes, it's quite strange, but good! ... the one I tried was vegetarian too - sometimes they're not. Always great to find stuff that only exists here and nowhere else.

Ah Dan, I see you have discovered Holsteiner Liesel. well done! We always had it at my parents', I think my sister was basically raised on the stuff.

@sands: I think you can only get it at special health food shops called "Reformhaus". There should be some in Munich, though. They're everywhere.

Schmalz is traditionally chicken fat, but can also be from other animals, duck, pork, etc. Similar to lard, healthy and delicious.

However what you show here is *vegetable* based schmalz, there's no such thing, so most likely this is just some concoction of "healthy" industrialized hexane extracted hydrogenated trans-fat vegetable oils catering to the fat=evil crowd who believe eating sugar is somehow healthier. As the packet says, it is "cholesterol free" (but has lots of sugar). Look up "big fat fiasco" on youtube.

Real schmalz can be hard to find though, because of all the fat dogma :(
